Behavioral Interview Questions

 

Behavioral interview questions are structured in a "Tell me about a time..." format.  They ask the candidate to give specific examples of how they have performed in past situation. 

Hiring managers select behavioral interview questions from the skills and activities that are most critical to the position.  The goal is to get a picture of the candidate doing the job.  Some of the common topics for behavioral interview questions include:

  • Leadership
  • Performance Management
  • Continuous Improvement
  • Teamwork
  • Project Management
  • Character/Values/Attitude

Every aspect of a job can be questioned in a behavioral manner.  You can anticipate the types of questions by reviewing the requirements and responsibilities for the job.  For example, if you are interviewing for a sales position, it is likely that your customer service experience will be a priority.  This could lead to behavioral questions like:

  • Tell me about a time when you exceeded a customer's expectations.
  • Tell me about a time when you failed to live up to a customer's expectations.
  • Tell me about the last time you had lost established customer.
  • Tell me about the most difficult customer you have had.

Behavioral questions focus on specific activities in your day-to-day work.  To answer effectively, give specific, detailed and organized answers.
